Long ago, further back than any cat can remember, the mountains were truly wild. No cat had yet laid any claim to the forest and the rivers; it was just another piece of earth to pass through. But then came a cat with a pelt that glowed like the summer sunrise, who saw the beauty and potential of the rocky cliffs, dense forests and rapid rivers. Her name was Dawn. She alone saw the land not for what it was, but what it could be: a home.
It's said the gentle molly spoke to the mountain. She learned its secrets and thoughts and hopes. As well as its fears, of which it had only one. For, you see, another had set their sights on the land within the mountains. A giant monstrosity of a cat named Fang vowed to take the mountain for himself and bending the very trees and rocks to his will.
The mountain pleaded with Dawn. Rid me of this terrible cat, it cried. And in return, I will offer you and your kin the shelter of my trees, the prey that run through my grasses, the water that weaves through the earth. Help me now, and this land will protect and provide for you.
Moved by the mountain's plea, Dawn set off. Knowing she could never defeat Fang on her own, she called upon all cats from across the land. She relayed the mountain's promise, quickly convincing the wandering cats to fight at her side.
The battle was fierce, leaving the ground bloody and torn. Fang was defeated. But it came with a heavy price. Just as the great cat fell, so too did Dawn.
As the cats mourned, the sun began to rise, chasing away the stars that had watched over their pyrrhic victory. All but nine brilliant points of light, which remained, hung neatly above the battlefield.
The days passed, and the cats began to wonder what would become of the mountain's promise. Anger sparked among the gathered felines and it was Dusk, Dawn's brother and second in command who stayed the furious crowd. "I will go to the mountains," he vowed. "And I will put things right."
And to the mountains he went. To this day, no cat knows what happened between Dusk and the mountain. What is known is he returned, glowing with new life and a new name. Duskstar. "We have fought together as one," he told the cats, "and so we shall continue to do, with the mountain on our side. We are now kin, one family. One clan!"
"DuskClan! DuskClan! DuskClan!" the cats cheered. Duskstar smiled and shook his head.
"No..."

"We are DawnClan."
